Texas secession petition draws support
Following Barack Obama’s re-election as US president, various petitions have emerged from disgruntled voters calling for the central government to break up the union.
While most have failed to garner widespread support, one request has in fact attracted a significant amount of backing on We the People, the official website that allows ordinary members of the public the opportunity to raise issues.
International movers heading to Texas will be interested to learn that, at the time of writing, a petition asking for the southern state to be “peacefully” granted the right to secede has attracted over 93,000 signatures in just four days.
This has more than eclipsed the 25,000 names needed for the White House to respond. The administration is now required to meet with representatives from all of the major policy offices and determine what course of action to take.
According to the petition, Texas has absolute legitimacy in making its own government because it has consistently maintained a balanced budget and has the 15th largest economy in the world.
“It is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect its citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers, which are no longer being reflected by the federal government,” the petition goes on to say.
