City guide Sydney
Expats living in Sydney can consider themselves lucky in many respects: Not only have they chosen one of the 10 most liveable cities in the world, but their city also ranks 17th in the 2014 Innovation City Top 100 index. The capital of New South Wales offers many perks to anyone living in Sydney: Australia’s biggest and most populous city is a truly exciting and multi-cultural metropolis with the country’s leading economy, surrounded by impressive scenery, both natural, like Bondi Beach, and manmade, like Sydney Harbour Bridge.
People from all over the world move to Sydney for various reasons: its temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters; its proximity to some amazingly beautiful countryside and national treasures like the Great Barrier Reef; its outdoorsy lifestyle; its prominent cultural and academic position within Australia; and, of course, the job market.
There are several visa categories relevant for expats moving to Sydney in order to work there on a temporary or a permanent basis. Classic expat assignments fall under the category Employer Sponsored Migration.
It’s not only individuals that take advantage of moving to Sydney, but many national and international companies appreciate it too. Between 2007 and 2012, more than 2000 businesses were added to the city, many of them the headquarters of international banks, offering plenty of jobs for those willing to travel to Sydney for them. Comfortably surviving the worldwide recession, Sydney is Australia’s greatest city-economy, generating more than 100 billion AUD per annum. The city not only attracts business and working expats but with five universities, regional campuses of four more universities and one conservatorium of music, the city also attracts growing numbers of international students.
Besides the pleasures associated with a wonderfully mild climate and great outdoor pursuits, Sydney also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene made up of fine galleries and museums, theatre productions, and a magnificent selection of restaurants and lively café culture. Additionally, there are festivals year-round for almost every occasion.
The cost of living in Sydney is high and expenses like accommodation, entertainment, transport and eating out are more expensive than other parts of Australia. However, it arguably offers a better quality of life if one considers that beaches and national parks are only a stone’s throw away from the city centre.
