New Chinese metropolis project will involve flattening mountains
Lanzhou is not that well known of outside of China, but that is all about to change. The capital city of the north-western Gansu Province is to undergo one of the most dramatic land transformations in the country’s history.
Officials have revealed that work on developing the Lanzhou New Area, which is comprised of 500 square miles of land, is to get underway. It is so ambitious and unprecedented that it will involve flattening mountains to make the land more favourable for construction.
The end result will be a futuristic metropolis that has the potential of significantly adding to the region’s GDP. Some figures have put this new state-level development zone as having the capacity to generate £27 billion by 2030.
“The establishment of the Lanzhou New Area marks the country’s latest effort to accelerate development of the western regions,” Qin Yucai, director of the National Development and Reform Commission’s Western Development Department, was quoted by China Daily as saying.
“The area will serve as a pilot zone for the nation’s economic restructuring efforts and as a strategic platform for opening up the western regions.”
A promotional video reveals the new area to be resplendent in jaw-dropping skyscrapers, massive industrial spaces, beautiful parks and lakes, sports stadiums and amenities that will make this one of the most desirable places to live in the world.
