Culture – Opernhaus

Zurich’s world famous opera house was opened in 1891 and is a beautiful example of architecture from the time. In opera season you can expect to see works by Verdi, Wagner and Bizet, amongst many others. Ticket prices for a ballet or opera typically range from 35 CHF to 230 CHF. While you’re there, you should pay a visit to the elegant restaurant, perfect for a pre-show dinner or a light lunch overlooking the lake. Shopping – Neumarkt

Neumarkt could be seen as a furniture shop that is also an art gallery. In a similar way to how a visitor can get lost in the seemingly endless labyrinth of rooms in Ikea, seeing each collection in the context of how it could look in your home, Neumarkt takes the visitor a step further and does it in an infinitely more stylish way. Neumarkt is highly stylised with some beautiful and striking interior design that begs to be visited. From the outside, the building looks like any other rustic apartment building, but stepping inside will lead you to a spiral staircase leading you through four floors of exciting home design.

Relaxation – Sauna Utoquai

A popular destination for many people visiting Zurich is the walk along the lakeside promenade that often plays host to a whole scene of street performers, artists and street food sellers (not too dissimilar to London’s Covent Garden). If you find yourself there on a warm day, you’ll see many of the locals heading to the saunas and lake baths of Utoquai. Here you can bathe in the lake, or relax in the one of the serene saunas, steam baths or the hot tub at the edge of the lake.

Every Saturday morning the Gemüsebrücke Bridge hosts an extensive fruit, vegetable, flower and produce market that is more of a hotspot for locals than tourists; perfect for finding those fine delicacies that are produced for locals by locals. There is also a wealth of cafés and restaurants either side of the bridge, waiting for you after you have picked up your essentials and feel like you deserve to unwind with a coffee and a view of the Limmat River or Lake Zurich.
